Ukraine's steel products output slips 4.6% in H1 2020, exports down 8.3%

Steel products output in Ukraine reduced by 4.6% year-on-year in January-June 2020 to 9.03 million tonnes, according to a report published by national steel union Ukrmetallurgprom on Thursday July 16.

The drop in production volumes was attributed to lower demand in export outlets resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, more strongly protectionist policies in some of the major outlet markets, lower prices and an excess of steelmaking capacities globally.
There were also unfavorable conditions created by domestic monopolies such as Ukrainian Railways and Ukrainian Sea Ports Administration, and a number of "destructive" legislative and regulatory acts introduced by the Ukrainian authorities, according to the union.
