US flat steel import prices steady to higher

Prices for imported flat steel products moved sideways or slightly higher in the United States due to the spread between domestic and overseas metal making shipments from abroad competitive on a limited basis, market participants said.

"The buyers are checking the import prices right now, but they cannot find enough gap to convince them to buy imports now," a Gulf Coast trader said. "But if the US prices continue on the trend they are on, maybe the import window will open." 
Fastmarkets' price assessment for steel hot-rolled coil, import, ddp Houston inched up to $590-650 per short ton ($29.50-32.50 per hundredweight) on Wednesday October 28, up by 1.6% from $580-640 per ton on October 14.
