US hot-rolled coil index still steady; scrap costs pressure mills

Hot-rolled coil prices in the United States have continued to hold in a range of $24-25 per hundredweight ($480-500 per short ton) while mills seek to hold the line on finished steel prices in the face of higher input costs.

Fastmarkets' daily steel hot-rolled coil price, fob mill US was calculated $24.28 per cwt ($485.60 per ton) on Thursday May 14, down by 0.5% from $24.39 per cwt on Wednesday May 13 but up by 0.5% from $24.15 per cwt a week earlier on May 7.Inputs were received between $21 per cwt and $25 per cwt - a spread of $4 per cwt. That range is narrower than in past weeks when prices were inflecting upward...
