US markets, Noront at new highs

The indices closed up 0.4% and 0.9% respectively to 4,528.79 and 15,265.89 points.

In Toronto, shares in takeover target Noront Resources (TSXV: NOT) shot up 28.3% to a fresh high of C77c on a new bid from Andrew Forrest's Wyloo Metals.

Wyloo is now offering 70c per share, a 27% premium to BHP's 55c offer, which Noront had recommended over Wyloo's initial bid of 31.5c made in May.

Noront is yet to respond to Wyloo's improved offer.

The oil price neared US$70 a barrel as Hurricane Ida hit the US, impacting production in the Gulf Coast.

Uranium equities rose in Toronto as the spot price edged up to $33.70 per pound.

Gold softened to $1,810 an ounce on the spot market.

Finally, London was closed yesterday for a bank holiday.
