US plate prices hit by weaker scrap, demand

Steel plate prices in the United States retreated after ferrous scrap indicators were lower and buyers demonstrated a reluctance to stock up in the face of price hikes in the new year.

Fastmarkets' weekly price assessment for steel cut-to-length plate carbon grade, fob mill US weakened to $31 per hundredweight ($620 per short ton) on Friday February 7 from $32 per cwt on January 31 - the first decline in the price since early November, when it dipped to $30 per cwt before mill price increases went into effect. 
Lead times remain narrow at five weeks or less.
Market participants indicated that service centers were not committing to large-tonnage, forward-looking restocking purchases.
