USW members to vote on possible strike at Asarco

Workers at Asarco's copper mines and processing facilities in Arizona and Texas may vote to go on strike due to disagreements over the renewal of work contracts, a United Steelworkers (USW) union representative confirmed to Fastmarkets.

The union is holding informational member meetings to discuss the contract negotiations with Tucson, Arizona-based Asarco.Three meetings were scheduled to take place in Amarillo, Texas, on Thursday October 10, Manuel Armenta, a sub-director at USW, told Fastmarkets. "We have already held meetings in Arizona," he said.A strike vote is scheduled for Friday October 11; after the votes are cast, a decision will be made by late Friday evening, Armenta explained. The USW leads a coalition of eight international unions that represent...
