Vedanta's Skorpion zinc refinery to close over operating, economic concerns

Namzinc's Skorpion zinc refinery in Namibia, a subsidiary of India's Vedanta Resources, is set to go into care and maintenance just two weeks after resuming operations.

According to a joint statement issued by both the mine and the Mine Workers Union of Namibia, cited by national newspaper the Namibian, several failures had compromised a significant portion of its open cast mine. The decision to close was prompted by the risk of a subsequent ore gap that could last more than 10 months.
The announcement comes just two weeks after the operation resumed production after closing for four months due to a lack of local zinc oxide ore, which is Skorpion's preferred concentrate feed.
