Gobitz, currently president of the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP), joined Buenaventura in 2016 from base metal miner Milpo, taking over from Roque Benavides - son of company founder Alberto Benavides - at the helm of the company.

At Buenaventura, Gobitz has had to navigate falling gold production and the implementation of an optimisation programme to de-bottleneck the company's operations as it seeks to turn around its declining production profile while also facing significant investments on the horizon including its share of the Yanacocha Sulphides project.

The company reported a net loss of US$12.2 million in 2019 following a $13.4 million loss in 2018. Buenaventura produced 880,664 ounces of gold in 2019, 20.2Moz of silver, 49,803 tonnes of lead, 72,396t of zinc and 43,394t of copper. The company began 2020 targeting gold production of 615,000-755,000oz.

Gobitz will be replaced as president of Buenaventura by Leandro Garcia.
