VIETNAM STEEL SCRAP: Prices catch up to those in Bangladesh

Strong demand for ferrous scrap imports in the key Southeast Asian market of Vietnam has resulted in prices in the country catching up with those in Bangladesh, a major buyer in South Asia.

Keen interest was reported for deep-sea bulk cargoes of heavy melting scrap from the United States West Coast this week, and at least four cargoes have been sold to Vietnam in the past two weeks - three to the southern region, and one to the north.
The last few transactions were concluded at $301-303 per tonne cfr Vietnam, placing them just $4-6 per tonne below those in Bangladesh.
"Because business is good for billet exports from Vietnam, steelmakers in the country that produce semi-finished steel using induction furnaces and electric-arc furnaces are buying imported scrap," a Vietnamese trader told Fastmarkets on Thursday August 20.
