Here is Antonio Commisso, named in Italy as one of the most important Mafia bosses - head of a "dangerous, bloodthirsty" clan - buying a Ready Press over-the-door ironing board at a suburban plaza in Canada. ('Ndrangheta capo acquista un asse da stiro.)Commisso was accused of being the head of an important clan of the 'Ndrangheta, the proper name of the Mafia in Italy's southern region of Calabria and was a wanted man in his hometown of Siderno at the time. In truth, he was living comfortably in a large home north of Toronto.At the request of Italian authorities police in Canada secretly watched him until he was arrested in June 2005 and extradited back to Italy.On Nov. 18, 2004, he was secretly recorded carefully guiding his bulging shopping cart, filled with household wares including a Ready Press ironing board and bedding, through a crowded parking lot to a Volvo station wagon. His driver sits inside as he loads the car up. No matter how much power a Mafia boss may wield in the underworld, it should never be forgotten he also faces unseen forces in his private life - within his house and with his family.
