WEBINAR: Europe 'becoming epicenter of NEV sales growth in 2020'

For the first time since the boom began in China's new energy vehicles (NEVs) sector in 2014, Europe is taking the lead, according to Al Bedwell, director at Global Powertrain, part of independent sector services provider LMC Automotive.

"Europe is certainly the star of the show and is responsible for the overperformance of the battery electric vehicle [BEV] segment this year," Bedwell said during a recent Fastmarkets webinar on how the electric vehicle markets will behave in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the context of a fall in car demand so far in 2020, the BEV sector is holding up relatively well, Bedwell said.
Worldwide BEV sales from January to July 2020 were down by 15% to 780,000 units, compared with 910,000 units in the corresponding period in 2019, he said. But the overall car market globally was down by 26% over January-July, he added.
"That's despite Covid-19 and the poor market conditions for BEV demand in China and the United States," he said.
