While Tesla's chief, Elon Musk, has called for as much nickel to be produced as possible, this doesn't mean that Tesla will be producing any minerals of their own any time soon, said Ken Hoffman, senior expert at McKinsey.
"Everyone wants the same two things from an electric vehicle today, and that is, it [has the same range] as my gas car and it recharges as quick as my gas car. Technology today is headed to a place where we can do that, but in order to do that, we need certain metals, and the one metal we really need in the cathode...is you need nickel," Hoffman told Kitco News.
