The rise of battery electric vehicles will put major headwinds in the platinum group metals in the long term horizon, this according to Johann Wiebe, lead metals analyst at GFMS Refinitiv.
"Long-term, we kind of can see where things are headed, particularly for palladium and rhodium, which are now very elevated, this could be quite problematic because they're so concentrated in the automotive space, palladium 80% and rhodium I think up to 90%, and if for example we don't need after-treatments anymore because everybody's driving battery electric, then we will have to find some kind of a new application that will absorb that sort of metal," Wiebe told Kitco News.
